Gunter Backes heads the section Organic Plant Breeding and Agrobiodiversity at University of Kassel and, until recently, was a member of the Scientific Advisory Board for Biodiversity and Genetic Resources at the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture. His research focusses on the breeding of cereal crops such as wheat, spelt and barley for organic farming using genomic and marker-assisted methods and on the preservation of plant genetic resources.
